Marshall School District proposes 169 school days calendar and food service contract changes

Marshall Public Schools is set to implement significant changes to its academic calendar and food service provider following a recent board meeting. The district has decided to adjust its student instruction days from 156 to 169, responding to teacher feedback that indicated many felt they were falling behind. This change aligns with state financial incentives tied to a 169-day calendar, which will also allow the district to conclude the school year before Memorial Day, a move welcomed by both staff and parents.

In addition to the calendar adjustments, the board approved a new graduation date for next year's seniors, opting for a Friday night ceremony on May 8, which received overwhelming support from parents in a recent survey.

The meeting also highlighted a shift in the district's food service provider. After a competitive bidding process, Marshall Public Schools will transition from OPA Foods to Southwest Food Service Excellence (SFE) for a five-year contract. This decision was influenced by positive feedback from a committee that included students, who actively participated in the selection process.

Furthermore, the board discussed changes to printing services, opting to move away from the current provider, Ricoh, in favor of Toshiba. This decision is expected to enhance convenience for teachers by increasing the number of copiers available throughout the district, while also saving the district between $70,000 and $80,000 annually.

Superintendent Mr. Pettit also addressed upcoming salary packages for staff, proposing a 6% benefits package that includes a 2% salary increase and additional perks such as gym memberships and tuition reimbursement. This proposal is contingent on state funding, which remains uncertain due to ongoing legislative discussions.
