Park Council plans new glamping cabins and secondary host site at Wilkerson

Plans for expanding recreational facilities at Wilkerson Park took center stage during the Columbia County Board of County Commissioners meeting on February 12, 2025. The discussion focused on the addition of new cabins and a secondary host site, aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and accommodating growing demand.

Commissioners discussed the proposal to construct a shelter near the bathrooms, closer to the horse camp, which would serve as a secondary host site. The existing structure also requires a roof replacement, prompting further inquiries about the engineering and planning processes involved. "We need to ensure that we can expedite the final design and specifications for construction," one commissioner noted, emphasizing the importance of moving forward efficiently.

The conversation also touched on potential funding sources, with commissioners exploring opportunities for financial support from organizations like Travel Oregon. "We are a little flush with cash in parks, but it’s wise to seek external funding if available," one member remarked, highlighting the county's proactive approach to managing resources.

In addition to the immediate plans for six new cabins, the county has identified at least ten additional sites for future development. This expansion aligns with the growing popularity of "glamping," or glamorous camping, which includes amenities like hot tubs and upgraded cabins. "This is considered glamping," a commissioner confirmed, indicating a shift towards more luxurious outdoor experiences.

The meeting also revealed that Wilkerson Park is already seeing significant bookings, with events scheduled throughout the year, including live action role play events and a Muay Thai training camp. "We’re diversifying to bring in more people to the parks," one commissioner stated, underscoring the county's commitment to enhancing recreational offerings.

As plans progress, the county aims to create a vibrant destination that caters to a variety of interests, ensuring that Wilkerson Park remains a key asset for Columbia County.
