Needles City Council approves River Valley Motel conversion to 29 micro apartments

The Needles City Council has taken a significant step towards improving local housing options by approving a resolution for the conversion of the River Valley Motel into a multi-family residential complex. During the meeting on February 25, 2025, the council unanimously supported the conditional use permit, which will transform the existing motel into a complex featuring 29 micro-apartments and one manager's office.

City Manager highlighted the importance of this project, noting its role in the ongoing receivership process aimed at rehabilitating properties in the area. The motel, previously a site of concern due to poor living conditions, will now provide much-needed housing in a community where such options are limited. The conversion is expected to enhance the neighborhood's appeal and safety, as the property will undergo extensive renovations, including new kitchenettes, upgraded plumbing, and modern air conditioning systems.

The project, located at 1707 Needles Highway, falls within the general commercial zoning district, which permits such conversions with the appropriate approvals. The site plan includes three one-story buildings, a courtyard for tenant enjoyment, and ample parking spaces. Notably, the existing building footprint will remain unchanged, ensuring a smooth transition into the new residential use.

City Planner Irene Romero presented the project details, confirming that no public comments were received from nearby residents, indicating a lack of opposition to the development. The council's decision reflects a proactive approach to addressing housing needs in Needles, with expectations that the completed project will significantly improve living conditions for future residents.
