The Parlier City Council meeting on November 2, 2023, featured a significant proposal from Unwired Broadband aimed at enhancing the city’s internet infrastructure. The company’s director outlined plans to invest $4 million in a next-generation fiber optic network, which would provide advanced internet services to every home and business in the city.
Unwired Broadband plans to install approximately 200,000 feet of conduit, ensuring that each home receives one fiber optic cable and each business receives two. The proposed network is designed to support high-speed internet capabilities, with initial plans offering speeds of up to 5 gigabits. The infrastructure will also be adaptable for future demands, allowing for even higher speeds if necessary.
The company is seeking the city’s assistance in locating a 20 by 20-foot space for a central office, which will house essential equipment and a backup power supply to ensure continuous service. Additionally, Unwired Broadband is requesting a master encroachment agreement to facilitate access to city rights-of-way and public utility easements, solidifying their partnership with the city.
If approved, construction is expected to begin on January 1, 2024, with completion anticipated by summer 2024. This initiative aims to address the current lack of advanced internet services in Parlier, which has been identified as an underserved area. The proposal highlights the city’s potential for improved connectivity and economic growth through enhanced digital infrastructure.
