The DS200 scanners, often humorously referred to as "Oscar the garbage can" due to their appearance, play a crucial role in ensuring accurate vote counting. The court reviewed additional proposals for upgrading equipment, including a quote for three DS200 scanners and eight ExpressVote machines for $322,000, and another for four DS200 scanners and 216 ExpressVote machines for $80,400. However, officials noted that even with these upgrades, the county would still need more equipment to adequately serve all precincts.
Concerns were raised about the potential for long lines and voting accessibility, especially during the last county election, where some residents faced difficulties casting their votes. The court acknowledged that while there is currently no push in Frankfurt to revert to precinct-based voting, the evolving election laws could change the landscape in the future.
