North Dakota courtrooms upgrade security with $182K access control system and cameras

Griggs County is set to enhance security measures with a new door access and camera system, totaling approximately $182,539. The project, which earmarks 20 of the 44 controlled doors for courtroom use, is partially funded by a state grant covering 75% of the costs. If approved, Griggs County will receive $57,009.77 from the state, leaving the county responsible for about $124,561.

During the Griggs County Commissioners Meeting on December 16, 2024, officials clarified misconceptions surrounding the project, specifically addressing rumors of a $700,000 security system. The actual investment focuses on modernizing access control and surveillance, which includes 26 cameras, eight of which will be designated for courtroom purposes.

The new system promises significant upgrades in security management. It allows for remote locking and unlocking of doors, tracking of who enters and exits the building, and the ability to deactivate access badges if necessary. This is particularly beneficial for emergency situations, as the sheriff's department will have master keys for immediate access.

Commissioners emphasized the system's efficiency, noting that it can be tailored to restrict access based on time and user needs. The integration of digital credentials sent to smartphones further enhances convenience, reducing reliance on physical badges.

As the county awaits state approval for funding, the anticipated improvements aim to bolster safety and streamline operations within Griggs County facilities. The project reflects a proactive approach to security, ensuring that both public and employee safety are prioritized in the county's infrastructure.
