Louisiana AgCenter proposes $160 million disaster reduction initiative to combat wind hazards

During the Senate Insurance Committee meeting on March 14, 2025, a significant focus emerged on enhancing disaster resilience in Louisiana, particularly through the Louisiana Fortified Homes program. Carol Friedland, a structural engineer and director at the LSU AgCenter, highlighted the alarming projected annual losses due to wind hazards, estimating a staggering $1.2 billion in damages, with single-family homes accounting for $500 million of that figure.

Friedland urged the committee to adopt a comprehensive strategy that addresses both existing and newly constructed homes to mitigate these risks. In a proactive move, Friedland announced the LSU AgCenter's plan to submit a $160 million proposal to the National Science Foundation for the Louisiana Disaster Reduction Initiative (Louisiana DRY). This initiative aims to position Louisiana as a leader in disaster risk reduction by developing innovative technologies that enhance risk assessment and insurance affordability.

The committee expressed openness to suggestions for improving the low to moderate income pilot program, acknowledging the need for funding inspections to remove barriers for residents.
