Shadow Cats promotes TNR program to control feral cat populations

During a recent Harford County Council meeting, a representative from Shadow Cats, a nonprofit organization dedicated to managing the stray cat population, addressed the council to highlight the importance of their work and seek community support. Shadow Cats operates on a volunteer basis, focusing on a humane method known as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), which helps control the number of roaming cats while also preventing the spread of diseases.

The volunteer emphasized that for the past decade, Shadow Cats has provided free neutering and vaccination services, including rabies shots, to help keep the community safer. However, many residents remain unaware of these services. The organization is now seeking assistance from the council to raise awareness through community newsletters, constituent meetings, and potential advertising methods, such as lawn signs or billboards.

The representative pointed out the exponential growth of the stray cat population, noting that two cats can quickly become twenty, and within two years, that number could escalate to one hundred. By promoting TNR, Shadow Cats aims to significantly reduce this population and enhance the safety of both the animals and the community.

The council's support in disseminating information about Shadow Cats' services could play a crucial role in addressing the stray cat issue in Harford County, ultimately contributing to a healthier environment for both pets and residents.
