Tanya Childry advocates for Porterville's historic Jackass Mail Run fundraising event

The City Council meeting in Porterville on March 18, 2025, featured important discussions regarding community events and local initiatives.

Tanya Childry, a lifelong resident and former wagon master of the Jackass Mail Run, addressed the council to raise awareness about the challenges facing this historical event. She highlighted the increasing financial burdens due to rising permit costs from various agencies, including the California Department of Transportation and local authorities. Childry noted that the annual fundraising event, the X Wagon Master Dance, has struggled to meet its goals as attendance has dwindled and costs have risen. She invited the community to support the dance on April 5 at the Elks Lodge, where they will also announce the new Wagon Master.

Additionally, Virginia Garolla spoke on behalf of the American Association of University Women, celebrating the 95th anniversary of their Porterville branch. She emphasized their commitment to advancing equity for women and girls through educational programs, including scholarships for girls to attend STEM camps at Fresno State.
