During the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board meeting on October 22, 2024, a heartfelt presentation highlighted National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Dimitria Trevades, a 15-year-old student at Flagstaff High School, took the floor alongside her father to share insights on supporting individuals with Down syndrome.
Dimitria, who was born with Down syndrome, emphasized the importance of kindness, understanding, and inclusion. She outlined practical ways to support individuals like herself, including fostering a judgment-free environment, encouraging independence, and promoting social interactions. "Be sure to use clear communication and celebrate achievements, big or small," she advised, stressing the need for patience and tailored activities in educational settings.
The presentation also recognized the supportive role of teachers, aides, and coaches at Flagstaff High, particularly highlighting the contributions of football coaches who have made Dimitria feel included in the team. "Demi loves football, and the coaches take so much time to make sure he's included," her father noted, reflecting on the sense of belonging that sports can provide.
The meeting concluded with a call for greater awareness and understanding of Down syndrome, leaving the board and attendees with valuable tips on how to create a more inclusive community for all students.
