Students showcase storytelling skills at district festival in collaboration with Weber State University

The Davis School District Board of Education held a vibrant business meeting on March 18, 2025, showcasing the talents of local students and emphasizing the importance of arts in education. The meeting began with a warm welcome from board members, who expressed appreciation for community attendance despite inclement weather.

A highlight of the evening was the participation of students from Viewmont High School, who led the Pledge of Allegiance, demonstrating leadership and confidence. Superintendent Linford acknowledged the significance of student involvement in board meetings, encouraging their input throughout the session.

The meeting featured a special presentation on the district's annual storytelling festival, which celebrates the intersection of art and literacy. Dr. Logan Toon introduced the initiative, noting its long-standing support from the district and collaboration with Weber State University. Over 50 students participated in this year's festival, with 27 advancing to perform at Weber State alongside national storytellers. This opportunity not only showcased student talent but also fostered engagement and rapport with audiences.

Laurie Wharton, a supervisor in the teaching and learning department, shared her enthusiasm for the storytelling performances, highlighting the natural storytelling abilities of children. She introduced three young performers from Mountain View Elementary: Jackson Olsen and Lolli Paul, both in third grade, and sixth grader Esther Benj. Their participation exemplified the district's commitment to nurturing creativity and confidence in students.

The meeting underscored the district's dedication to enhancing educational experiences through arts programs, with plans for continued support and collaboration in the future.
