Provo City Council is moving forward with significant plans for the Provo Municipal Airport, as discussions during the recent work meeting highlighted a proposed interlocal agreement with Utah County. This agreement aims to secure up to $78 million in funding for a major terminal expansion, which is expected to enhance airport operations and accommodate growing passenger traffic.
Airport Director Bridal Torgerson presented two resolutions to the council, one of which involves appropriating $19.5 million from the airport fund specifically for the terminal expansion. The expansion is crucial as the airport has seen a surge in activity, currently serving ten commercial airlines and offering 16 nonstop destinations. This growth has raised questions about sustainability, but Torgerson reassured council members that airlines are performing well and expanding their routes, indicating a healthy demand for air travel from Provo.

Funding for this phase will come from a combination of a loan from the Utah Department of Transportation and federal FAA funding. The terminal expansion will be executed in phases to meet funding deadlines and operational needs, with plans to enhance ticketing and baggage screening areas as a priority.
In addition to the terminal improvements, the council discussed the need for better parking facilities, addressing community concerns about the current gravel lots. Torgerson noted that the expansion will also include upgrades to parking areas, which are essential for accommodating the increasing number of travelers.
As Provo Municipal Airport continues to grow, the council's commitment to investing in its infrastructure reflects a broader goal of enhancing local transportation options and supporting economic development in the region. The next steps will involve finalizing the interlocal agreement and moving forward with the construction timeline, ensuring that the airport can meet the demands of its expanding passenger base.
