Delaware addresses immigrant contributions and proposes Office of New Americans for support

Delaware's immigrant community is poised for greater support and integration following discussions at a recent Senate Elections & Government Affairs Committee meeting. With approximately 115,000 immigrants making up 11.2% of the state's population, their contributions to Delaware's economy are significant. In 2019 alone, immigrant households paid over $471 million in federal taxes and $1.17 billion in state taxes, showcasing their vital role in local economies.

The meeting highlighted the diverse origins of Delaware's immigrants, primarily from Africa, Mexico, India, Guatemala, China, and Jamaica. This demographic not only enriches the cultural landscape but also plays a crucial role in the workforce, comprising 18% of the STEM sector and 12% of entrepreneurs. Notably, immigrants represent 35.8% of the state's farming and fishing workforce, addressing critical labor shortages in various industries, including healthcare and agriculture.

Despite these contributions, immigrant entrepreneurs face systemic barriers that hinder their potential. The proposal for an Office of New Americans aims to tackle these challenges by providing targeted resources, workforce training, and policy recommendations to streamline access to capital and professional licensing.

Drawing inspiration from neighboring states like New York and New Jersey, Delaware could implement similar initiatives. New York's network of opportunity centers has successfully increased naturalization rates and empowered immigrants economically. Meanwhile, New Jersey's Office of New Americans has expanded financial aid for college students regardless of immigration status and provided legal support for those facing detention.

The establishment of an Office of New Americans in Delaware would not only honor the state's commitment to diversity and inclusion but also ensure a thriving future for all residents.
