Kewaunee Power Station explores next-gen nuclear tech with Terrestrial Energy MOU

In a recent Kewaunee County Board meeting, discussions centered around a promising new project involving the Kewaunee Power Station, which could significantly impact the local economy. The meeting highlighted a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Energy Solutions and Terrestrial Energy, aimed at exploring the deployment of next-generation integral molten salt reactors at the site. The proposed project could generate over 300 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent high-skilled positions, with an estimated capital reinvestment of $500 million. If a data center were to be established alongside the reactor, the potential investment could soar to approximately $3.3 billion, creating over 2,000 jobs and generating an annual economic impact exceeding $100 million. The anticipated annual property tax revenue from such developments could reach $76 million, providing a significant boost to local finances.

The board members expressed enthusiasm about the potential of these projects, noting that they could replace jobs lost when the original power plant closed. The economic modeling presented during the meeting suggested that the combined projects could lead to a total capital investment of over $3 billion and create between 2,000 to 3,000 jobs in the county.

Supervisor Swago raised questions about the housing aspect of the project, inquiring about the affordability of homes for first-time buyers. The response indicated that the proposed homes would be entry-level single-family residences, designed to be accessible for young families.

As the meeting progressed, discussions also touched on the possibility of multiple small nuclear reactors at the site, which could provide additional energy solutions while addressing environmental concerns. The newer reactor technologies are expected to be more efficient and require less water for cooling, a significant advantage for the region.
