Mid Valley Elementary celebrates achievements and recognizes student excellence at board meeting

The Board Meeting held on March 18, 2025, in Utah commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mid Valley Elementary Principal Margaret Swanicky, who subsequently shared highlights about the school. She presented a list of ten reasons why it is beneficial to be a student at Mid Valley, emphasizing achievements such as the school’s improved report card ratings and its exit from Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) status. Principal Swanicky highlighted the school's commitment to student safety, a collaborative culture, and the success of its dual language immersion program.

Following the school highlights, the meeting transitioned to the Canyon Strong student recognitions segment, presented by Jeff Haney, Director of Communications. Haney acknowledged the achievements of students and staff within the Canyons District, noting that honorees would receive commendation letters from the board and superintendent. He also mentioned that the meeting was being broadcast on CSD TV, produced by students.

The recognitions included the Hillcrest High robotics team, which won the prestigious Impact Award at the Utah FIRST Robotics Regional Competition, securing a spot at the World Championships. Additionally, Brighton High teacher Kristen Reuter was recognized as a finalist for the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Brighton High's Model United Nations team was celebrated for their success at an international conference in New York, where they earned top honors, including first place in preparation and research. The meeting also recognized Corner Canyon High School's Coach Jeff Yer, who was named the SHAPE Utah Teacher of the Year for Athletics and Coaching.

The meeting concluded with a note of encouragement for Andy Marcus, a finalist for the National Education Support Professional of the Year award. The board expressed pride in the accomplishments of the students and staff, reinforcing the district's commitment to excellence in education. The next steps include continued support for the recognized individuals and upcoming community events to celebrate educational achievements.
