Thaddeus Stevens College plans new dorm and dining hall at main campus

In the heart of Lancaster, city officials gathered to discuss an ambitious project that promises to reshape the landscape of Thaddeus Stevens College. The Planning Commission Meeting on March 19, 2025, unveiled plans for a new five-story building that will house a modern dining hall and 150 dormitory beds, a significant addition to the college's main campus.

The proposed site, nestled between East King, South Broad, New Dauphin, and Stevens Streets, spans two parcels of land—one owned by the college and the other by the state's Department of General Services. The project area, which will see about 1.3 acres of disturbance, is currently home to a parking lot that will be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly space, enhancing the campus's accessibility for students.

Key features of the new building include a consolidated kitchen and dining facilities on the main level, with entrances oriented towards the west. The design aims to create a welcoming environment for students, with a focus on pedestrian traffic as vehicular access will be limited primarily to emergency services and special events.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the project's commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Plans include the removal of 51 parking spaces, leaving a total of 418 available, which exceeds the zoning requirements. Additionally, six bike parking spaces will be added near the dining hall entrance, with discussions underway about potentially increasing this number to accommodate more cyclists.

The project has already received variances for building height, allowing it to rise to just under 64 feet, and adjustments have been made to ensure compliance with zoning ordinances regarding setbacks. The college is also addressing stormwater management and utility connections, with a focus on minimizing environmental impact.

As the meeting progressed, questions arose about fire access and trash collection logistics, with assurances given that fire trucks would have adequate access routes to the building.
