Jasper County approves paving bids and tourism development agreement

The Pickens County Board of Commissioners made significant strides in infrastructure development during their March 17, 2025 meeting, focusing on essential projects that promise to enhance local services and tourism.

A key highlight was the board's unanimous decision to authorize the chairman to submit an application for annexation into the city of Jasper. This move is aimed at facilitating the provision of sewer services for a new terminal being developed within the county. The chairman emphasized the simplicity of the process, stating, “It’s just kind of remedying something that’s kind of been in place for a while.” The board's swift approval reflects a commitment to advancing local infrastructure.

In addition, the commissioners approved bids for two major paving projects. Johnson Paving LLC was awarded the contract for parking lot improvements at the county administrative building and library, with a bid of $419,827.56. The board also greenlit a $2,001,060.13 bid from Colton's Trucking for road paving, contingent upon the completion of necessary waterline work on Henderson Mountain Road. The chairman noted the importance of moving forward with these projects, stating, “We have to get the EPD to finish their work first.”

The meeting also included the renewal of an annual agreement with the Chamber of Commerce for tourism development services, which allocates a portion of hotel-motel tax funds to support local tourism initiatives. This agreement is crucial for promoting Pickens County as a destination, with two-thirds of the tax revenue directed to the Chamber.

Lastly, the board addressed surplus equipment from various departments, approving the sale of outdated vehicles and equipment, including fire department stretchers and a 1985 Chevy Blazer. These decisions reflect the county's ongoing efforts to streamline operations and manage resources effectively.
