Dawson County officials are moving forward with a significant road improvement project aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility on Shoal Creek Road. During the Board of Commissioners Work Session on December 19, discussions centered on the approval of a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) application, which seeks $497,000 from the Georgia Department of Transportation for a full-depth reclamation of the road.

County representatives highlighted the critical need for this project, noting that Shoal Creek Road serves as a vital arterial route connecting the city to State Route 136. The proposed improvements include the addition of a paved safety shoulder, similar to enhancements made on Bur Creek Road. The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.1 million, with the county contributing over 30% of the funding.

Commissioners emphasized the importance of coordinating with contractors already mobilized for nearby projects, such as the roundabout and bridge work, to potentially reduce costs. The board is expected to approve the LMIG project in the coming weeks, with hopes of securing additional funding for future road safety initiatives.

In addition to the road project, the meeting also addressed an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Dawsonville regarding the upcoming 2025 municipal elections. This agreement, already approved by the city, is a standard procedure to facilitate the election process through the Board of Elections and Registration.
