Med Fleet defends ambulance services amid competition from new providers in Citrus County

A heated debate over ambulance services took center stage at the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners meeting on December 10, 2024, as local healthcare leaders voiced concerns about competition and service quality.

Jennifer Russell, Executive Director at TGH Crystal River, and Samantha Wells, Director of a freestanding facility, both expressed their apprehensions regarding the potential influx of new ambulance providers in the area. Russell emphasized the reliability of Med Fleet, stating, "We have direct communication with them and they do their best to correct what needs to happen." Wells echoed this sentiment, arguing that allowing more companies to enter the market could dilute the quality of care and lead to inefficiencies. "I would like to keep it local," she said, advocating for continuity of care for patients.

Jeff Taylor, Chief Operating Officer of Med Fleet, defended his company’s long-standing presence in the community, highlighting their commitment to service and infrastructure. He pointed out that Med Fleet has been a part of Citrus County for over 31 years and has consistently met the needs of local healthcare facilities. "We have demonstrated that we've met the need here," he asserted, countering claims that there was a demand for additional providers.

The discussion also touched on the complexities of ambulance transport needs, with Taylor clarifying that many facilities do not require ambulance services as frequently as suggested. He presented data showing low transport volumes from several local facilities, arguing that the existing providers are adequately serving the community.
