The Citrus County Legislative Delegation meeting held on October 30, 2023, focused on critical discussions surrounding public education, particularly in the areas of school safety and career and technical education (CTE). Assistant Superintendent Scott Herbert represented the Citrus County Schools, expressing gratitude for the ongoing support from state legislators, including Senator Ngolya and Representative Massulo.
Herbert highlighted the importance of school safety, referencing the tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. He emphasized the need for continued financial support for safety and mental health initiatives, noting recent increases in funding for these areas. He urged legislators to consider further financial allocations through the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP) to address rising costs associated with school safety.
The meeting also addressed the expansion of career and technical education programs within the district. Herbert mentioned the successful construction academy at Citrus High School, which currently serves around 150 students. He announced plans to expand the Academy of Health Careers at Crystal River High School, which has been a cornerstone of vocational training in the community for 30 years. This program prepares students for various careers in the healthcare sector and STEM fields, offering a comprehensive curriculum that includes real-world experiences.
Vice Chairman Thomas Kennedy further elaborated on the significance of CTE, stating that the district offers 150 courses across 70 industries. He underscored the urgent need for skilled workers in the healthcare industry, projecting a demand for approximately 1,000 new workers in the region within the coming year.
The meeting concluded with a call for continued legislative support to enhance educational opportunities and address workforce needs in Citrus County. The school representatives expressed their openness to collaboration and invited legislators to visit local schools to witness the programs firsthand.
