The Homosassa River Restoration Project is making significant strides, according to Steven Mingai, who provided an update during the Citrus County Legislative Delegation meeting on October 30, 2023. Mingai reported that Phase 1 of the project, covering nearly 24 acres, has been successfully completed, with over 120 million pounds of muck removed and 130,000 grass units planted.
After facing delays from the Army Corps of Engineers, the project team received permits for Phases 2 and 3 just a month ago. Mingai noted that they quickly mobilized, working seven days a week to continue restoration efforts. However, they must cease work by November 15 due to the winter manatee season. Despite this, Mingai expressed optimism about receiving approval for limited winter work.
Funding remains a critical aspect of the project. Thanks to previous support, the team has enough resources to complete Phase 2 and is seeking the same level of funding for the upcoming year to finish Phase 3. This would restore approximately 50 acres of the blue waters in Homosassa, which have been green for too long. Mingai emphasized the importance of these waters for local recreational activities, such as scalloping and fishing, and called for continued support to bring the blue waters back to life.
