Citrus County is gearing up to host a major college fishing tournament that could significantly boost local tourism. During the Citrus County Tourist Development Council meeting on November 13, 2024, council members discussed the potential of bringing a college fishing series event to the area, which could attract around 200 to 250 boats and thousands of spectators.
The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the prestigious Bassmaster Classic, offering substantial television exposure, including live coverage on FS1. The council highlighted the logistical needs for the event, including accommodations for participants and staff, and the importance of securing a suitable venue. Liberty Park was identified as an ideal location, providing ample space for weigh-ins and audience seating, as well as parking facilities.
Council members emphasized the economic benefits of hosting such events, drawing parallels to successful fishing tournaments in other small towns that have seen significant visitor turnout. They noted that events like these not only enhance local visibility but also promote Citrus County as a prime fishing destination, encouraging visitors from states like Minnesota and Wisconsin to explore the area.
In addition to the fishing tournament, the council also discussed updates to their promotional materials, including a full-page advertisement in the Visit Florida official vacation guide, set to be printed in early December. This strategic move aims to further attract tourists to Citrus County, reinforcing the message that the area is a must-visit destination in Florida.
As the council continues to refine its strategic plan, the focus remains on leveraging events that align with the county's identity while fostering growth in a way that preserves its unique charm. The anticipated fishing tournament could be a pivotal moment for Citrus County, positioning it as a key player in Florida's tourism landscape.
