Flagler County officials are moving forward with plans to construct a new general aviation terminal at the Flagler Executive Airport, a project estimated to cost $10 million. During a recent commission workshop, airport director Roy Seager emphasized the terminal's potential to enhance the airport's role as a significant economic driver for the county. The proposed terminal will span 15,000 square feet, providing space for airport administrative offices and public meeting areas.
Seager noted that securing funding for the terminal has been challenging. Despite multiple requests for federal funding through the FAA, the airport has not received the necessary financial support. The current funding landscape is competitive, with only $100 million allocated nationwide for general aviation terminals, making it difficult for smaller airports like Flagler to secure their share.
The discussion also highlighted a strategic shift in funding priorities. Seager explained that previous decisions to prioritize T-hangar construction over the terminal were made to ensure fiscal responsibility and generate additional revenue for the airport. The T-hangar project is expected to yield an extra $230,000 annually, which is crucial for maintaining the airport's self-sustaining enterprise fund.
To make the terminal project more appealing to potential funders, Seager suggested reducing the initial funding request to $5 million. This adjustment could increase the likelihood of securing additional support from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which has indicated that funding would need to be distributed over several years.
As the county prepares to move forward, officials remain committed to pursuing all available funding opportunities. Seager assured the commission that he would continue to apply for federal funding as soon as it becomes available, emphasizing the importance of the terminal for the airport's future growth and economic impact on Flagler County.
