A significant proposal for a new medical facility in Flagler County took center stage during the recent Flagler County Commission Workshop on September 6, 2023. The discussion highlighted the urgent need for a modern health department to replace the current facility, which is over 30 years old and has outgrown its capacity to serve the community effectively.
Bob Snyder, representing the health department, outlined three main reasons for the proposed relocation. First, the existing facility is inadequate for the growing services offered, including nursing clinics and primary care. Second, 78% of the health department's clients come from Palm Coast, underscoring the necessity for a more accessible location. Finally, the new facility aims to foster a "no wrong door" approach, allowing for better navigation of healthcare services by co-locating with various social service organizations.
Commissioner O'Brien raised concerns about the potential challenges of housing multiple entities within the new facility, but Snyder reassured that the Department of Health supports community partnerships, which would enhance service delivery. The existing health department building will still be utilized for other essential services, ensuring that no resources are wasted.
The commission also discussed the importance of securing support from the City of Palm Coast for the funding request, which is expected to be substantial. While Palm Coast officials recognize the project's benefits, they view it as primarily a county responsibility. However, they are willing to provide a letter of support to accompany the funding request.
As the commission prepares to prioritize various projects for state funding, the health department's proposal stands out as a critical need for the community. With an estimated total funding request of around $100 million for multiple projects, the commission is keen to ensure that the health facility remains a top priority in their discussions with state legislators. The outcome of this proposal could significantly impact public health services in Flagler County, serving thousands of residents in need.
