LaBelle Airport plans 2025 Swamp Cabbage airshow following successful fly-in event

Hendry County officials are gearing up for an exciting addition to the 2025 Swamp Cabbage Festival with the approval of an air show at LaBelle Airport. During the Hendry County Board of County Commissioners meeting on December 10, 2024, the board discussed plans for the event, which aims to enhance the festival experience for both residents and visitors.

The proposal, presented by aviation enthusiast Ken Wells, seeks to build on the success of last year's flyover event. Wells emphasized the importance of safety and community engagement, noting that the air show will be coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure compliance with regulations. The event is designed to complement the Swamp Cabbage Festival rather than detract from it, with careful planning to minimize traffic disruptions on Cowboy Way, a major thoroughfare during the festival.

The board expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting the positive feedback received from last year's event. The advisory board had previously reviewed the proposal and was receptive, with only a few concerns regarding insurance that staff will address.

In addition to the air show discussions, the meeting included an update on ongoing litigation concerning a rezoning petition for an R&R harvesting mine. County Attorney Matt Rallison informed the board that the petitioner has filed an appeal in circuit court following the board's decision to deny the rezoning request. Rallison assured the board that he would provide further updates as the situation develops.
