Citrus County is set to welcome a new maker space after the Planning and Development Commission Board approved a lease agreement for a county-owned building during their meeting on November 7, 2024. This initiative aims to transform an underutilized facility into a vibrant community hub where residents can engage in creative projects and learn new skills.
The maker space will occupy approximately two-thirds of the building and is designed to foster innovation and collaboration among community members. For a membership fee of around $50 per month, individuals will gain access to various resources, including embroidery equipment, laser cutting and etching tools, 3D printers, and a fully equipped wood shop. Additionally, the space will feature an electronics assembly area, where local high school robotics club members will receive hands-on training in soldering and electronics.
The county will maintain a portion of the building for its sandbagging operation, ensuring that emergency services remain a priority. In the event of a weather emergency requiring sandbag distribution, the maker space will temporarily close, demonstrating a commitment to community safety.
The lease agreement includes provisions for safety measures, such as the installation of fire extinguishers and handicap parking signs, which will be subject to county approval. The maker space organizers have expressed their intention to maintain a positive relationship with the county, emphasizing their goal of being exemplary tenants and contributing to the local business community.
This new maker space is expected to enhance community engagement and provide residents with valuable skills and resources, marking a significant step forward in Citrus County's development initiatives. As plans progress, the community can look forward to a space that encourages creativity and collaboration.
