Citrus County is set to welcome a new makerspace after the Planning and Development Commission Board approved a significant land use change during their meeting on November 7, 2024. The board voted to rezone a property from telecommunications and utilities to general commercial, allowing for the establishment of a planned unit development that will support various light industrial activities.
The proposed makerspace, as outlined by Mr. Green, will occupy approximately two-thirds of the building, with Citrus County retaining the remaining third for public works purposes. This innovative facility will offer community members access to woodworking, laser etching, 3D printing, sewing, and electronics assembly, operating 24/7 on a membership basis. The goal is to provide residents with the opportunity to learn and utilize advanced technology and equipment.
While the project received positive feedback regarding its compatibility with the surrounding commercial area, the board emphasized the importance of maintaining the county's interest in the property. To address this, the applicant has included provisions in the lease that ensure the county can reclaim the site for essential services, such as sandbag storage during storm events.
This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing local resources and fostering creativity and innovation within the community. As the makerspace prepares to open, residents can look forward to new opportunities for learning and collaboration in Citrus County.
