During a recent Planning and Development Commission Board meeting in Citrus County, residents voiced significant concerns regarding a proposed development project along US 19, particularly its potential impact on traffic and flooding in the area.

One resident highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvements along Kingston Drive, emphasizing that without raising the road, retention ponds would not function properly, leading to flooding in nearby homes. This concern was underscored by the resident's experience during Hurricane Helene, where rising water levels from surrounding canals created a hazardous situation.

Another speaker, Joanne Bartel, clarified misconceptions about the project, noting that only a small portion of the property—2.5 acres—was designated for commercial use, while the majority remains residential. She pointed out that the adjacent residential area is undeveloped and awaiting sewer services, contradicting claims that it would support intense commercial development.

Bartel also raised critical traffic safety issues, stating that the current design of US 19 prohibits left turns onto the highway from Atlas Drive, which could pose significant challenges for the 196 RVs expected to exit the development during peak travel times. She urged the board to consider creating an exit onto Kingston Drive to alleviate potential traffic congestion.
