City Council prepares Tree Ordinance update ahead of Arbor Day event

The Tree Advisory Committee in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, is moving forward with significant updates to its tree care policies, aiming to enhance community safety and environmental protection. During their meeting on March 20, 2025, members emphasized the urgency of finalizing a revised ordinance to maintain the city’s status as a Tree City. The current policy, last updated in February 2007, requires modernization to align with contemporary standards.

Committee members discussed the need for a final draft of the updated ordinance by May 15, 2025, to ensure timely implementation. The revisions are expected to clarify enforcement responsibilities and potentially eliminate outdated fines and permits that have not been enforced in the past. The committee is focused on creating a more effective framework for tree management that reflects current community needs.

In addition to policy updates, the committee is preparing for the upcoming Arbor Day event on April 26, 2025, at Urban Park. This year’s celebration, dubbed the Spring Vintage Festival, aims to attract more community participation. Plans include setting up a booth to promote tree planting and care, although logistical challenges regarding space and vendor arrangements were noted.

The committee is also working on promotional materials to increase awareness and engagement for the Arbor Day festivities, with efforts to collaborate with local organizations for joint advertising. A flyer has already been created and shared on social media to boost visibility.
