Miami Beach Board approves Apollo mural installation on new fire station

The City of Miami Beach is set to enhance its cultural landscape with the installation of the historic Apollo mural at the new fire station on Sixth Street. During the Historic Presentation Board Meeting on July 11, 2023, city officials and community members expressed strong support for the project, which aims to preserve a significant piece of local history.

The Apollo mural, originally created by artist Jack Stewart in the 1950s, depicts the Greek god Apollo driving his chariot across the sky, flanked by his twin sister Artemis and their mother, Leto. The mural was previously located at the Versailles Hotel but was removed and stored in 2015 during renovations. Thanks to the efforts of local advocates, including Mitch Novick, the mural is now poised for restoration and relocation.

The board approved the application for a certificate of appropriateness, allowing the mural to be installed on the west facade of the new fire station. This location was chosen for its suitability and potential to enhance the Flamingo Park neighborhood. The mural, measuring over 100 feet long, will be displayed on a specially designed structure that allows for maintenance and protects it from environmental damage.

Community members voiced their enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its cultural significance and the collaborative efforts that have made it possible. The Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association and other local organizations have expressed their support, emphasizing the mural's role in enriching the community's artistic heritage.

As the project moves forward, plans include the installation of lighting to showcase the mural at night, ensuring it remains a vibrant part of the neighborhood. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the placement of informational signage to educate the public about the mural's history and the artist behind it.
