During the recent Board of Education meeting on March 19, 2025, urgent discussions centered around the support for English Language Learner (ELL) students, particularly those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). A key point raised was the critical need for adequate staffing to ensure that these students receive the full support mandated by law.
One board member highlighted that while 99% of ELL students with IEPs are receiving some support, there are concerns about the sufficiency of services. "We’re under serving them, and this is urgent," the member stated, emphasizing the immediate need for additional resources as the number of ELL students has increased this year.

Although these students are fewer in number, the district employs various methodologies to ensure they can access content and develop English proficiency. ELL teachers utilize tools like pocket talk translators and TESOL methodologies to aid comprehension.
In addition to addressing these pressing needs, the board discussed budget proposals aimed at enhancing Academic Intervention Services (AIS) during the school day. However, financial constraints were acknowledged, with the possibility of hiring an assistant director for ELL services being put on hold due to budget limitations.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue addressing these challenges and a recognition of the progress made in supporting ELL students. The board's proactive stance reflects a dedication to improving educational outcomes for all students, particularly those facing language barriers.
