This program offers assistance with rent, transportation, utility bills, and even mortgage payments. Scherzer emphasized the holistic approach taken by ICA, stating, "We try to look at the person's needs as a whole," ensuring that clients are not only helped with immediate needs but also connected to resources that promote long-term stability.
Another exciting initiative is the Diverse Business Assistance Program, which provides grants of up to $5,000 for individuals looking to start their own businesses. This program aims to empower aspiring entrepreneurs by helping them develop business plans and navigate the necessary steps to launch their ventures.
Scherzer also highlighted the QUEST Child Care Development Program, which assists individuals in opening licensed daycares, and the Head Start and Early Head Start programs that support children from birth to age five. These programs are crucial for working families, providing educational and nutritional support.
The meeting also addressed the challenges faced by local food pantries, particularly the Hayward Community Shelf, which has seen a reduction in funding but continues to serve the community through donations and grants.
In addition to these programs, ICA offers a variety of services, including home visiting programs for new parents, discounted internet and phone services for low-income families, and support for veterans through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.
As the meeting concluded, attendees were encouraged to take informational brochures about these vital programs, reinforcing the agency's commitment to being a resource for the community. The discussions underscored the importance of community action in addressing local needs and fostering resilience among residents.
