Smithville students excel at DECA HOSA and FBLA state competitions

The Smithville School District Board of Education held a meeting on March 19, 2025, where they recognized several student groups for their achievements in various competitions. The meeting began with a celebration of the DECA students, who qualified for the state competition. Doctor Don Simon, the DECA advisor, introduced seven students, including Ellie Herner, Lily Burns, Will Sapp, Autumn Blankenship, and Ryker House, who will represent Smithville at the state level. The students expressed their excitement about the upcoming competition, which aims to qualify for the International Career Development Conference.

Following the DECA recognition, the board acknowledged the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) state qualifiers. Mrs. Kim Morgan, the HOSA sponsor, introduced students Emily Dickwitz, Ellie Herner, Alana Scribe, and Raina Williams, who will compete in various health-related categories. Morgan noted that this year marked a doubling of participants compared to the previous year.

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state qualifiers were also recognized. A representative introduced the team, highlighting their upcoming participation in the FBLA State Leadership Conference. The group expressed gratitude for the support they received and excitement for the competition, which will take place in April.

The meeting continued with the recognition of the wrestling team, which had several athletes qualify for the state meet. Head coach Taylor Middleton introduced the wrestlers, who shared their individual achievements, including placements at the state level.

Lastly, the girls' swim team was acknowledged for their successful season, with head coach Kyle Martin introducing the state qualifiers. The swimmers celebrated their accomplishments, including broken records and strong performances at the state meet.
