The City Council of Defiance, Ohio, made significant strides in infrastructure development during its meeting on December 3, 2024, approving key funding and contracts for two major projects. The council unanimously adopted emergency legislation to facilitate the Ralston Avenue roundabout project and the Ottawa Avenue Corridor improvements, both of which are set to enhance traffic flow and safety in the city.

The Ralston Avenue project will receive $1,780,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT) Small Cities Congestion Mitigation Program. This funding aims to address congestion and improve access around the area, which is experiencing growth due to nearby commercial developments, including ProMedica Regional Hospital. Similarly, the Ottawa Avenue project is backed by $1,500,000 from the ODOT's Transportation Alternatives Program and Systemic Safety Program, targeting enhancements in a low to moderate-income area.

To ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding property acquisition, the council selected West Erie Realty Solutions Limited to negotiate with affected property owners. The negotiations will involve compensation for 18 property owners along Ralston Avenue and 14 along Ottawa Avenue, with contract prices set at $113,800 and $74,800, respectively.

In addition to these projects, the council discussed the purchase of a gas membrane replacement for the water pollution control plant, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to maintaining essential city services.
