Sylvania City Council approves $200K property purchase for development near 10 Mile Creek

The City of Sylvania took significant steps towards urban development during its City Council meeting on January 6, 2025, with the approval of two major ordinances aimed at enhancing infrastructure and public safety.

The council unanimously passed Ordinance No. 5-2025, authorizing the purchase of properties located at 5710 and 5720 Summit Street for $200,000. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move to facilitate future development near the Tenth North Fork of the 10 Mile Creek, following a thorough environmental inspection that revealed no contamination concerns. City officials emphasized the importance of this purchase as a foundational step for potential larger projects in the area.

In another highlight, the council approved Ordinance No. 6-2025, which allocates $6,189,185 for the US 23 Monroe Street interchange improvement project. This ambitious initiative, which has been in the works since 2015, is set to enhance traffic flow and safety at a critical junction. The project is expected to begin construction in April 2025, with a full closure of the bridge anticipated for five months in early 2026 to expedite the work.

City officials expressed optimism about the project, noting that it has garnered substantial funding, including a $1 million grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission. The anticipated total cost of the project is approximately $27.5 million, with ongoing efforts to secure additional funding to minimize the city's financial burden.

Additionally, the council discussed the Brent Road and Haroon Road intersection, where a roundabout is planned as part of a traffic calming initiative. The city has secured $1 million in funding for this project, which is currently in the design phase.
