Whitehall officials announce youth advisory council and plan community poverty eradication van

The Whitehall City Council meeting on March 24, 2025, kicked off with a positive message from the mayor, who expressed hopes for a prosperous year ahead for all residents. The meeting highlighted several key initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement and addressing pressing local issues.

One of the most significant announcements was the formation of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council, set to hold its inaugural meeting this month. This council aims to involve young residents in discussions about economic development, parks and recreation, and civic engagement. The mayor emphasized the importance of including youth voices in decision-making processes, inviting a council member to participate due to her role in community advocacy.

Additionally, the council discussed the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day scholarship event, which will award two Whitehall Yearling High School seniors with $1,000 scholarships for their essays on Dr. King's final work. This initiative, founded by the mayor and a council member years ago, continues to foster educational opportunities and honor Dr. King's legacy.

The meeting also addressed the city's efforts to combat food insecurity. A recent soft launch of the Whitehall Food Van demonstrated the community's need for support, as nearly 50 boxes of food were distributed in just one hour. The mayor expressed pride in the community's response and highlighted the van's role in addressing poverty and providing workforce opportunities.

In other discussions, the mayor praised the city's street department for their exceptional snow removal efforts, noting that they cleared approximately 141 miles of roads during recent winter weather. This dedication has made Whitehall a model for other communities in Central Ohio.

As the meeting concluded, the council members expressed their commitment to achieving their goals for the year and encouraged public participation in future discussions.
