North Kingstown reports 73% voter turnout and plans beach lifeguard recruitment

During the North Kingstown Town Council meeting on December 16, 2024, officials celebrated a remarkable voter turnout in the recent election, with over 17,000 residents casting their ballots, resulting in a turnout rate exceeding 73%. This achievement positions North Kingstown among the highest in Rhode Island, particularly highlighting the success of early voting and mail-in ballots, which accounted for more than half of the total votes. In addition to electoral matters, the council discussed upcoming developments, including a meeting with the developer of Wickford Elementary, anticipated to provide updates in January. A significant concern raised was the future operations of Town Beach, as the Greater Providence YMCA will no longer assist due to a lifeguard shortage. This change poses challenges for the town, which is actively seeking to hire lifeguards and other personnel to ensure safe beach operations during the summer.

Financially, the Town Beach faced a net loss of over $100,000 in 2024, with expenses significantly outpacing revenue from parking passes. The situation is expected to worsen in 2025 due to an increase in the state minimum wage, which will further strain the budget for beach operations and summer camps. Town officials are working on a comprehensive plan to address these challenges and aim to present it during upcoming budget deliberations in March and April.

The council also encouraged community members to consider lifeguard positions, emphasizing the importance of safety at the beach and the opportunity for local youth to gain employment. As the town prepares for the next summer season, officials remain committed to ensuring that the beach remains a safe and enjoyable destination for residents and visitors alike.
