The Canal Winchester Local School District Board meeting held on March 11, 2024, focused on recognizing outstanding staff contributions, sharing updates on school activities, and discussing community support initiatives.
The meeting commenced with the presentation of the "Knock Your Socks Up" awards, celebrating exceptional staff members. Sarah Ness was honored for her kindness and dedication to supporting families within the school district. Kevin Barhorse, a high school teacher, was also recognized for his commitment to student success, particularly for assisting a student recovering from an injury by providing extra help in AP Calculus.
Following the awards, Kevin Barhorse, representing the Canal Winchester Education Association (CWEA), shared several exciting updates. At Indian Trail Elementary, Gretchen Brecker completed her reading endorsement, enhancing her teaching qualifications. Additionally, first graders enjoyed a concert by a string quartet from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, which was well-received by students and staff.
Barhorse also highlighted the achievements of the CW Varsity Singers and CW Corral, who received superior ratings at a recent district competition, qualifying them for the state competition in April. Furthermore, Cassie Dickinson organized a Krispy Kreme fundraiser, raising approximately $1,300 for the CWA scholarship fund to support future educators.
The meeting also addressed a fundraising drive organized by CWA, which raised over $5,000 for Canal Winchester Human Services. Aletha Mullins provided insights into how these funds would be utilized to support the community food pantry, which has seen an increase in demand, serving between 550 to 600 people monthly. The funds will help purchase essential items that are not typically donated, such as canned goods and personal care products.
The meeting concluded with an invitation for public comments. Although no speakers had signed up in advance, a member of the audience, Eric McGee, identified himself as one of the founders of the Canal Winchester Tomahawks, indicating a willingness to engage with the board.
Overall, the meeting underscored the district's commitment to recognizing staff excellence, enhancing educational experiences, and supporting community needs through collaborative efforts.
