The Columbus City Schools Board of Education meeting on November 28, 2023, commenced with a warm welcome from student Bridal Oates of Columbus Downtown High School. Oates encouraged the community to reflect on the rejuvenating effects of Wellness Week and to harness that energy as the semester progresses.
The meeting featured a superintendent's report highlighting several notable achievements and events within the district. Alpine Elementary School was recognized for winning the October attendance challenge among Region 5 schools, significantly reducing chronic absenteeism. To celebrate this accomplishment, the Columbus Crew hosted a pep rally for the students.
In another highlight, American Electric Power welcomed 50 eleventh and twelfth graders from Columbus City Schools to one of its training facilities during National Apprenticeship Week. This visit provided students with insights into various career pathways and the opportunity to apply for apprenticeships, emphasizing the importance of registered apprenticeships in promoting economic recovery and equity.
Additionally, students from Oakland Park and Westgate had the opportunity to meet authors Robbie and Matthew during a special event linked to the National Council of Teachers in English conference. The authors, who travel the country in a tiny home school bus, distribute free books to students and teachers, fostering a love for reading.
Looking ahead, the Pathway Express will arrive at the Wexner Center for the Arts on December 9, offering free admission for students and families. Attendees can participate in art workshops, view the art gallery, enjoy a short film screening, and meet author Inosanto Nagara.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the district's ongoing commitment to enriching student experiences and fostering community engagement.
