The Fairborn City School District Board of Education convened on March 7, 2024, to discuss significant updates regarding educational programs and compliance with new state legislation. The meeting highlighted advancements in the district's CareerTech programs and the implementation of Ohio's Aaron's Law.
The session began with a presentation on new equipment for the biomedical and engineering programs. The district is set to acquire advanced tools, including Anatomage tables, which are used in medical schools for anatomical education. These tables will enhance student learning by providing realistic simulations and are expected to be delivered by July 17, in time for the opening of the new Fairborn High School. Additionally, the engineering program will receive multiple 3D printers, laser engraving machines, and a robotics arm, all aimed at providing students with hands-on experience in modern manufacturing and programming.
Following the equipment discussion, the board addressed the requirements of Aaron's Law, embedded in Ohio Senate Bill 288. This law mandates that school districts teach students about personal body safety and how to report abuse by the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Fairborn Primary School will implement the "Child Safety Matters" curriculum, while Fairborn Intermediate and Baker Middle School will utilize "Fight Child Abuse" lessons. For grades 7 through 12, the district will cover topics such as dating violence prevention and suicide awareness, using programs like "Violence Free Relationships" and "Signs of Suicide."
The district has proactively communicated with families regarding these sensitive topics, sending letters that include QR codes linking to the curricula for parental review. Parents have the option to request their child's exemption from the required lessons in writing.
The meeting concluded with a call for questions, emphasizing the district's commitment to providing age-appropriate instruction and ensuring student safety. The board's discussions reflect a forward-thinking approach to education, integrating cutting-edge technology and addressing critical social issues within the curriculum.
