The Wyoming City School District celebrated significant achievements during its May 2024 Board of Education meeting, highlighting the impressive accomplishments of students across various academic and extracurricular programs.
Principal Brian Goshen opened the meeting by acknowledging the success of the district's third-grade team, which scored in the top 10% nationally, a testament to the hard work and dedication of both students and educators. This achievement is part of a broader trend, as the district has consistently performed well, having previously earned similar accolades in 2017 and 2018.
The meeting featured presentations from advisors of key academic programs, including the Power of the Pen creative writing competition. Students showcased their talents, with several earning individual awards at district and regional tournaments. Notably, eighth grader Marina Pierman placed tenth overall at the state tournament and received the prestigious Platinum Pen award, which recognizes outstanding writing that will be published in a winners' anthology.
In addition to writing, the district's MathCounts team also made headlines by securing third place among 40 participating schools, earning a spot at the state competition for the first time since 2018. This achievement reflects the growing enthusiasm for math among students, as they engaged in both individual and team challenges.
The meeting also included discussions about the Model United Nations program, with students preparing to represent their school in upcoming competitions. This initiative encourages students to engage with global issues and develop critical thinking and public speaking skills.
As the school year progresses, the Wyoming City School District continues to foster an environment of academic excellence and extracurricular involvement, preparing students for future success while celebrating their current achievements. The community can look forward to more updates as these programs evolve and students continue to excel.
