Central Crossing student Marley Williamson joins Macy's Great American Marching Band

In a vibrant gathering at the South-Western City School District Board of Education meeting on December 9, 2024, the atmosphere buzzed with pride and celebration as achievements from students and staff took center stage. The evening began with heartfelt congratulations to Westland High School's Air Force ROTC unit, which earned an impressive "exceeds" rating during a formal assessment in November, reflecting the strong support for the program and the professionalism of its cadets.

The spotlight then shifted to Central Crossing High School's Marley Williamson, a sophomore who showcased her talent by earning a coveted spot in the Macy's Great American Marching Band. Marley represented not only her school but also the state of Ohio in the nationally televised Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a remarkable achievement that highlights her dedication and skill among thousands of applicants.

Further accolades were bestowed upon Franklin Heights High School students Moozie Aden and Kenny Quinn, who were awarded the prestigious QuestBridge Match Scholarships. Out of over 25,000 applicants nationwide, these two students stood out, securing full tuition scholarships to Stanford University and Case Western Reserve University, respectively. Both plan to pursue pre-med studies, marking a significant step toward their future careers.

The meeting also recognized the exceptional contributions of staff members, including Mr. Jason Graham, the band director at Gross and Behavioral, who received the Role in Distinction Award from Ohio State University for his excellence in teaching. His recognition as the eighth recipient of this honor underscores the district's commitment to educational innovation and leadership.

In a spirit of community service, over 40 cadets from Westmont High School's Air Force JROTC participated in a Thanksgiving initiative, distributing 600 free meals to families in need. Additionally, the District Service Center staff conducted a successful donation drive, collecting essential clothing items for the PTA clothing room, which supports families across the district.

As the meeting transitioned to operational management discussions, the board prepared to address eight action items, signaling a proactive approach to the district's future.
