The West Geauga Board of Education convened on October 28, 2024, to discuss a significant turf replacement project for the district's athletic fields, a move that promises to enhance both safety and longevity for student athletes. The meeting featured presentations from representatives of Osborne Engineering and Vasco, who outlined the details of the project and its anticipated benefits.
The current turf, installed in 2014, has reached the end of its expected lifespan. The new plan involves replacing the existing field with a state-of-the-art Vertex Core system, which boasts a 10-year warranty—unlike the previous 8-year warranty. This upgrade is expected to extend the field's usability to 12 years or more, providing better value for the district's investment.
Key to the project is the recycling of the existing infill material, which will not only reduce waste but also lower costs associated with the new installation. The process will involve removing the old turf, cleaning and reusing up to 85% of the infill, and laying down a new surface that is designed to withstand the rigors of multiple sports, including soccer, lacrosse, and football.
Scott Burra from Osborne Engineering emphasized the importance of starting the project early to avoid delays during the construction season. He noted that the district's proactive maintenance of the current field has allowed it to last longer than many comparable installations, including those at Ohio Stadium.
The board's decision to move forward with this project reflects a commitment to providing safe and high-quality athletic facilities for students, aligning with broader goals of enhancing educational and extracurricular experiences within the West Geauga community. As the project progresses, residents can expect updates on timelines and further developments, ensuring transparency and community engagement throughout the process.
