Olmsted Falls City School District is making strides in preparing students for future careers through its innovative Lean 6 Sigma program. During a recent Board of Education meeting on December 14, 2023, Kelly Kogan, a program coordinator, provided an overview of the initiative that has successfully engaged high school students in practical problem-solving and process improvement techniques.
Launched in the 2021-2022 school year, the program began with a single cohort of 15 students and has since expanded to include multiple cohorts each year. This year, the district anticipates that 82 students will have earned their Lean 6 Sigma yellow belt by the end of the school year. The program not only equips students with valuable skills but also enhances their college applications, as many participants recognize the competitive edge it provides.
Kogan highlighted the program's structure, which includes site visits to local businesses such as Vitamix and Cleveland Clinic, allowing students to see Lean 6 Sigma principles in action. Feedback from students and parents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the program's selective nature and its relevance to their future careers.
Despite its success, the program faces challenges, particularly regarding students missing school to participate. Kogan mentioned the need for potential adjustments, such as offering half-day sessions to minimize class disruptions. The district is also exploring partnerships with local businesses to secure funding for additional cohorts, aiming to broaden access to this valuable learning experience.
As the program continues to evolve, the district remains committed to fostering student readiness and engagement, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the challenges of college and the workforce. The Lean 6 Sigma initiative exemplifies the district's dedication to providing meaningful educational opportunities that extend beyond traditional academics.
