Denton Solid Waste Director updates Board on recycling success and future plans

The Denton Public Utilities Board meeting on March 24, 2025, focused on the solid waste and recycling department's performance and future plans. Solid Waste Director Brian Burner presented a comprehensive update, highlighting significant achievements and upcoming initiatives aimed at improving waste management in Denton.

During the past fiscal year, the city collected over 35,000 tons of curbside waste, while successfully recycling approximately 5,180 tons, achieving a curbside recycling rate of 17%. This marks a notable improvement from previous years, as the city has reduced the average waste generated per person from nearly 6 pounds to 4.4 pounds per day, which is below the EPA standard. The department also reported that yard waste collection reached nearly 9,000 tons.

Burner emphasized the importance of community involvement in these successes, stating that the partnership between the city and its residents has been crucial. He noted that the city is on track to meet its goal of diverting 30% of waste by 2030, currently standing at 26%.

The meeting also addressed several high-profile projects, including the implementation of a commercial diversion plan, which aims to engage local businesses in recycling efforts. As of January 2025, 1,100 out of 2,100 commercial customers had submitted diversion plans, with ongoing outreach to the remaining businesses.

Looking ahead, the department plans to optimize service routes to accommodate the city's growth, with a proposed reassignment of service days for 1,600 residents. Additionally, there are plans to enhance the home chemical collection program and establish a bulk material reuse facility to support community needs.

The board discussed the potential for a new transfer station on the west side of Denton, which would improve waste management efficiency and extend the lifespan of the landfill. The city currently has about 50 years of landfill capacity remaining, and efforts to divert waste are expected to prolong this further.

Overall, the meeting underscored the city's commitment to sustainable waste management practices and the importance of community engagement in achieving these goals. The solid waste department aims to continue its progress while adapting to the growing needs of Denton residents.
