Commission discusses access and activation concerns for Waterloo Greenway project

A significant discussion emerged during the recent Austin Design meeting regarding the accessibility and community engagement of a new project near the Waterloo Greenway. Commissioners expressed concerns about how the development will connect to the popular boardwalk and how it will serve the community when not hosting events.

Commissioner Carroll raised a crucial question about accessing the Waterloo Greenway Boardwalk from the southeast corner of the site. The response highlighted that while there has been thorough coordination with the Waterloo Greenway team, the boardwalk is currently under construction and lacks direct access from the new property. The only access points will be at Fourth Street or via a new pedestrian crossing over Cesar Chavez, which may limit foot traffic and connectivity.

Concerns were also voiced about the project's potential for community activation. One commissioner pointed out that without events, the area might not engage the public effectively. They emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety, particularly at the busy intersection of Third Street, which could see heavy foot traffic.
