The West Bend Parks & Recreation Commission meeting on April 25, 2024, highlighted an exciting development for local mountain biking enthusiasts: the proposal for new mountain bike trails at Regner Park. This initiative, presented by local youth and supported by community organizations, aims to enhance recreational opportunities while promoting safe biking practices.
Eighth grader Jaden Schumacher, a member of the Trail Sharks mountain biking team, shared his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the park's ideal topography for beginner-friendly trails. The proposed trails will be designed to accommodate both mountain bikers and hikers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all park visitors. The plan includes a two-mile single-track loop and a connector trail, with careful signage to direct bikers and maintain separation from hiking paths.
The collaboration between Gears, a local biking group, and Nika, a youth mountain biking organization, aims to create trails that are accessible to young riders. Jaden noted that the new trails would not only benefit his team, which consists of over 50 athletes from Washington County, but also other local biking groups. The project is expected to be completed within four to six weeks, allowing the Trail Sharks to utilize the new trails by July.
In addition to the mountain bike trails, the commission discussed the importance of maintaining Regner Park as a multi-use space, balancing the needs of different recreational activities. The community's involvement is crucial, as Gears plans to organize volunteer workdays to assist with trail construction.
This initiative reflects a growing commitment to enhancing recreational facilities in West Bend, providing residents with more opportunities for outdoor activities and fostering a sense of community among local youth. As the project moves forward, it promises to enrich the park experience for both bikers and hikers alike.
