Cabooses Revitalization Efforts Continue in Chillicothe with New Projects and Volunteer Call

During the recent Chillicothe City Council meeting held on March 24, 2025, community member Connie Scott passionately addressed the council regarding the city's historic cabooses, which are owned by the city and have become a focal point for local heritage and tourism. Scott expressed gratitude for the council's support and highlighted recent improvements made to the cabooses, including a fresh coat of paint and interior renovations in preparation for the upcoming Statehood Days event.

Scott noted that the cabooses, particularly the 1927 B and O model and a 1975 chassis model, have seen significant community engagement, with over 65 visitors touring them during the last event, despite inclement weather. She emphasized the dedication of the volunteer team, who are well-informed and take pride in showcasing the cabooses to the public. The organization plans to extend its operating hours to accommodate more visitors, particularly on weekends.

In addition to their regular tours, the cabooses will participate in various downtown events and school tours in collaboration with the Ross County Historical Museum. Scott also announced a significant upcoming project to replace the outdated heating and cooling system, which has been in place for over 30 years. While funding for the air conditioning has been secured through a grant, Scott highlighted a new city code requirement that necessitates additional funding for electrical upgrades, amounting to $17,000.

Scott made a heartfelt appeal to the council and community members for donations to support the cabooses, which rely heavily on community contributions. She encouraged anyone with the means to assist to consider donating, emphasizing the importance of preserving this local landmark for future generations.
