Dartmouth Middle School celebrates growth of Unified Sports and community involvement

The Dartmouth School Committee meeting on March 24, 2025, highlighted the success and growth of the Unified Sports program at Dartmouth Middle School. Bill Garcia, the social worker and program coordinator, presented an enthusiastic overview of the initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion and community engagement among students.

He shared that the Unified Basketball team now includes 13 to 14 students, while the cheerleading squad has tripled in size to 17 members. The program not only focuses on sports but also fosters friendships and community spirit, with events like the recent unified basketball game against Westport drawing over 300 students to the stands.

The meeting also showcased the integration of vocational skills into the program. Students participated in a spirit week initiative, where they managed a spirit shop, gaining practical experience in sales and teamwork. This hands-on approach is designed to enhance students' learning and social interactions, further solidifying the program's impact on the school community.

Garcia acknowledged the support from staff and local businesses, which has been crucial for the program's financial sustainability. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have made the Unified Sports program a cornerstone of the school’s activities.

Students also shared their experiences, with Madison Leary highlighting the positive atmosphere during games and the friendships formed through the learning partners program.
