MBTA launches Fall River New Bedford commuter rail service after decades of hiatus

Governor Maura Healey celebrated the grand opening of the South Coast Rail service on March 25, 2025, marking a significant milestone for transportation in Southeastern Massachusetts. This new commuter rail line, which has not seen passenger service for over six decades, is now operational, providing direct trips between Boston and Fall River, as well as New Bedford.

During the event, Governor Healey expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including the state legislature, local communities, and federal partners, for their long-standing advocacy for this vital service. She highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Keolis, and numerous contractors and consultants who contributed to the project’s completion.

The South Coast Rail service will offer 32 direct trips every 70 minutes on weekdays and 26 trips every two hours on weekends. Additionally, shuttle trains will be available to provide flexibility for riders. All six stations along the route are fully accessible and equipped with modern facilities to accommodate passengers of all abilities.

Governor Healey emphasized the extensive preparation undertaken by the MBTA and Keolis, including over 1,000 safety tests to ensure the service's reliability. She acknowledged the dedication of the MBTA workforce, including operators and support staff, in delivering a high-quality rider experience.

As part of the launch, fare-free rides will be available through the end of March, with free weekend rides throughout April. Governor Healey encouraged residents to take advantage of this new service, which aims to enhance connectivity and provide a robust transportation option for the region.
